Clinton County Supervisor
Shawn earned a B.A. in Psychology at Loras College and a M.A. in Sociology at Loyola. He also attended Dublin Institute of Technology and was selected to the International Youth Leadership Conference at St. Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) where he debated the EURO as it relates to the formation of the emerging European Union.
Shawn served two-terms on the Davenport City Council where he first Chaired Finance and then Community and Economic Development Committees. Shawn served one-term as an Iowa State Senator representing the 42nd District of Scott and Clinton Counties. In the Legislature, Shawn was the Ranking Member on Rebuild Iowa and the Education Committees. He was also a member of the Natural Resources and Local Government Committees. While in the Legislature, Shawn was selected to be a delegate to the American Council of Young Political Leaders and joined the team in Israel and the West Bank of Palestine. In 2014 Shawn was elected to the Clinton County Board of Supervisors and in the 2017 calendar year serves as Board Chairperson.
After completing his education, Shawn began working as a adolescent substance abuse counselor with CADS while teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Black Hawk College. Shawn quickly rose to accept a teaching position as an Adjunct Instructor with the Eastern Iowa Community College District and Augustana College while serving as an Iowa State University Youth Field Specialist where he assisted with 4-H program development. Shawn is currently is a full-time instructor at Clinton Community College where he offers courses in Sociology, Social Problems, Criminology, Juvenile Delinquency, Family and American National Government.
Shawn is married to Amy Hamerlinck and has six amazing children, Ashton, Ryan, Courtney, Megan, Bennett, and Graham. Look for them on the wrestling-mat and at the baseball/softball fields this season! (And, yes.... he drives a mini-van.)
